The fabled island of Sumatra has always held a certain mystique. It is the world’s fifth largest island and largest “least evangelised” island on Earth. Sumatra is home to 75 people groups, 52 of which are classified as “unreached” with the gospel. The island and its Muslim unreached peoples by and large have historically been by-passed in the wider sweep of mission history. There were significant turnings to the Lord among the Bataks and other animistic peoples reaching back over 100 years ago, but until recently there has been little international effort to take the gospel message to the majority Muslim peoples. Let us pray for God’s rule and reign to become a reality among every people group in Sumatra.
